The Manaslu Circuit with the Tsum Valley (also called “Hidden Valley of Happiness”) trek is a 21 days promising trip that takes trekkers close to the world’s eighth-highest peak, Manaslu (8,163 m).
It is a classic & sacred trek that takes travelers to the remote and untouched Tibetan culture along with the stunning views of the Himalayas. The visitors will be overjoyed in the peaceful environment of two tempting destinations: the TSUM Valley and Manaslu Circuit.
It was once a restricted region. Since 2008, it was open for the trekker’s. It is one of the less-visited regions of Nepal. In the course of travelling, you’ll be able to see the majestic views of mountains that include Ganesh, Himalchuli, Ngadi, Bouddha Himal and Mount Manaslu. Further, we’ll also cross the Larkya (5,160 m) – one of the most adorable high Himalayan passes of the world.
From Kathmandu valley, you’ll drive to Soti Khola, and then the Manaslu Circuit, with the TSUM valley trek begins. You will go through the settlements of Lapubesi to reach the Machhakhola. Upon that, we’ll cross the Budi Gandaki River and step into the charming village of Jagat.
On the 3rd day of the trek, we’ll set our steps to Jagat. It is an entry point and a restricted area of the Manaslu Conservation Area. All trekker have to show their permit before proceeding ahead.
Upon that, we’ll explore the charming places like Lokpa, Philim, and Chumling. On the 6th day of our journey, we’ll enter the upper TSUM valley.
Continuing our incredible journey, you will arrive in the vibrant village of Chokkang and the Nile. Similarly, on the 8th day, we have our first acclimatization at Mu Gompa. It has an elevation of 3,700 meters.
Upon that, we’ll pass through several elegant and charming settlements, scenic routes. Further, we’ll explore the farmlands, terraced fields, flora & fauna, wildlife, deep valleys & gorges, alpine meadows, glacier moraines till our 21-day journey concludes.

Today is the first day of the Manaslu Circuit with the TSUM valley journey. After having an early morning breakfast, we’ll have a bus ride to our first day destination.
The journey offers stunning mountain views, breathtaking vistas, and terraced farmlands. It takes around 8-9 hours to reach Sotikhola. From Aurughat, the road is totally destructive.
At the end of the day, we’ll reach Sotikhola. Overnight stay and dinner at the tea house.

This is the beginning of our leg. We’ll follow the moderate trails. After crossing a bridge, it followed by the Sal forest. There are several ups and downs with the rocky paths.
Upon walking for some hours, we’ll arrive at the elegant village of Gurung, Khursane and rest for a while. Lately, we’ll follow the Budi Gandaki River before reaching the Nauli Khola.
From Nauli Khola, it will take an hour to reach Maccha Khola. You’ll have lunch, rest and prepare for the next day’s trip.

The third day of the trek is an important portion of the Manaslu and TSUM valley trek. We’ll cover a distance of 21-22 kilometres with the elevation gain 560 meters. It takes around 6-7 hours to accomplish the third day journey.
After taking a meal, our trek begins. We’ll have steep ascents and descents before crossing the Budhi Gandaki River via a suspension bridge. The trail passes through the villages named Khorlabesi, Tatopani and Doban.
At Tatopani, you may also have a natural hot shower. Upon that, our trails lead us to Yaru Khola and finally Jagat. You’ll get stunning views of the mountains from top of this place.

The trek from Jagat to Lokpa covers a distance of approximately 17-20 kilometres. It takes around 6-7 hrs to reach Lokpa.
After leaving Jagat, we’ll head towards Sallaeri. Further, the trail descends to Sirdibas – traditional Buddhist settlements. Upon that, you will ascend upwards to Philim, which lies in the Manaslu Conservation Area
Thereafter, we’ll upwards our feet up to EkleBhatti, and then you set our steps at Lokpa – the first village of TSUM valley.

We’ll gain an approx 350 meters of elevation while trekking to Chumling. The trails include gradual ascent passes through rhododendron and pine forests.
You’ll have scenic views of mountains and diverse landscapes. Further, you’ll pass through some traditional villages that offer glimpses of the Ganesh Himal.
After reaching Chumling, there will be several monasteries, chortens and Gumba to explore. It is the premier place for a night’s stay and delicious food.

This is one of the scenic segments for the trekkers. Today, we’ll leave the lower and enter the Upper TSUM valley.
Following breakfast, we’ll cross a small suspension bridge that takes us to Domje – a small settlement. Further, the trail continues through Rainjam and then Gho Village. Here, we’ll rest for a while and enjoy the massive view of Ganesh Himal.
Thereafter, after steeper climbing, our foot takes us Chokkang Paro – the Upper TSUM valley. At this place, one can learn about Buddhist culture through monasteries, gompas and chortens.

On day 7, we’ll explore the stunning mountains, Tibetan villages, and sacred monasteries of Upper Tsum Valley. Following breakfast, we’ll walk through comfortable trails, passing terraced fields and farmlands before reaching Rachen Gompa.
We’ll spend some time at Rachen Gompa. It is the sacred and ancient place of the TSUM valley. Further, there will be a decent trail that goes through the villages of Burji and Phurbe. During walking, you’ll also have a backdrop of Ganesh Himal and Shiringi Himal.
From Phurbe, we’ll reach the Nile soon after crossing the Shair Khola via a suspension bridge.

Today we’ll take a rest. Acclimatisation is extremely important before taking your steps to a higher altitude. We’ll have a short 3-4 hours hike to Mu Gompa (3,700 m) – the highest and remotest part of the TSUM valley.
On our way, we’ll explore the sacred Milarepa Piren Phu Cave. Continuing our treks, we’ll have uphill walking before reaching Mu Gompa.
After reaching here, we’ll explore the oldest and largest monastery. There is no tea house in the Mu Gompa. Therefore, you have to stay in a monastery.
From the top of this place, there will be spectacular views of Ganesh Himal, Manaslu and Himalchuli.

After a peaceful night at Mu Gompa, we will descend back to the TSUM valley. We’ll follow yak pastures, diverse landscapes and traditional settlements,
After a few hours of the easy descent, our trekking group will Rachen Gompa. Upon exploring this beautiful place, we’ll continue our journey and trek down the TSUM valley to reach Chokkang Paro.
We’ll again follow a terraced field and farmlands. Along the way, you will see a Tibetan-style stone-paved house. After 2-3 hours of walking, we’ll finally arrive at the Chokkang Paro.

Today, we’ll have mostly downhill walking. We’ll have an elevation loss of 624 meters. It is a moderate trek that takes around 5-6 hrs.
After having breakfast, we’ll pass through a small settlement, crossing diverse landscapes with a backdrop of Ganesh Himal.
Upon that, we’ll cross terraced fields, streams and mani walls before reaching Domje. At this place, we’ll take rest and have lunch.
Thereafter, we’ll descend down our steps and pass through Siar Khola via a small suspension bridge.
Following that, we’ll pass two beautiful villages, Rainjam and Gho, before reaching Chumling.

The trek from Chumling to Deng, typically takes 6-7 hours of the trek. It covers the distance of 15-17 kilometers with an elevation loss of 580 meters.
After leaving the Chumling, we’ll cross the suspension bridge. You will have a downhill hiking before reaching the Lokpa village. Upon that, you will descent Syar and Budi Gandaki River before reaching the Philim.
Thereafter, there is a gradual walk from Philim to Eklebhatti. Upon that, you will cross the suspension bridge to reach the Deng.

The trek from Deng to Namrung covers the distance of 20-21 kilometres with an elevation gain of 826 meters. It takes around 5-6 hrs to complete the trek.
After leaving Deng, we will ascend towards Rana, a charming small settlement. The trek offers impeccable views of mountains and landscapes before reaching the Ghap. From here, we’ll have gradual ascents passing the rhododendron and oak forests.
Afterwards, crossing a small suspension bridge, we will arrive at the Namrung.

The trek from Namrung to Lho is a relatively short and scenic hike that typically takes 4-5 hours. On the 13th day, you’ll have elegant views of mountains and diverse landscapes.
After leaving Namrung, we’ll pass through Lihi – a picturesque village in the Manaslu region. Along the way, we’ll have the adorable views of the Ganesh and the Himalchuli.
Continue walking; we’ll pass through rhododendron and oak forests before reaching Sho.
Thereafter, we’ll see Ribung Monastery before reaching Lho. From here, we’ll have excellent views of Mount Manaslu.

Today morning, we will all be flawless and mesmerised by seeing the sun rise above Manalsu. The journey to Samagaun from Lho is relatively easy and a short distance compared to other day treks.
After having breakfast, we’ll pass through gompas and chortens. Upon walking for an hour, we’ll reach Shyala – a small settlement in the Manaslu region. Upon that, our trails take us through pine and rhododendron forests before reaching Samagaun.
On 14th day, we’ll have impeccable views of stunning mountains – Mount Manaslu, Himalchuli and Ngadachuli.

Today is the second acclimatisation day of our Manaslu Circuit with the TSUM Valley trek. Today, we’ll take a rest at Samagaon.
We’ll also have several activity options. We may hike to beautiful glacial Lake Birendra near Samagaun.
The eighth-tallest mountain base camp, Mount Manasl,u which has an elevation of 4,800 meters, is quite accessible from this village.
We may also explore the Pun Gyen Gompa. It is one of the oldest monasteries that offer incredible views.

We will continue trekking on the 16th day. We’ll have a fairly short hike of 3-4 hrs. After taking breakfast, we will have gentle ascents on the north side of the Budhi Gandaki River. We’ll pass through yak pastures, grazes and alpine meadows.
The trails offer a spectacular view of Mt. Manaslu, Samdo and other surrounding peaks. We’ll cross an uneven wooden bridge and approach Kermo Kharka and Kani.
After admiring alpine scenery, we’ll reach Samdo. It is just a few hours away from the Tibetan border.

Today is another relaxing day of our strenuous Manaslu Circuit with the TSUM Valley trek.
After having breakfast, we’ll hike to the Tibetan border, Rui La, which has an elevation of 4,998 meters. While hiking, we’ll have striking views of the mountains. Furthermore, we’ll have short glimpses of our neighbouring country, Tibet.
The hike is not only to enjoy the scenic environment. n. It also offers cultural insights and understanding of the Tibetan local customs.

After taking a delicious meal at Samdo, our journey will resume.. We’ll have a steady ascent to reach Dharamsala from Samdo, aka Larkya Phedi.
Initially, we’ll pass through Atharya and the Lark River. Upon that, we’ll have glimpses of the Larkya La glacier. Furthermore, we walk along the Salka Khola valley and ascend to the paved stone guest house known as Dharamsala.

Today is the most beautiful day of our entire Manaslu Circuit with the TSUM Valley trek. Our journey is going to be challenging but equally rewarding.
We’ll start early to cross the impressive Larkya La Pass (5,160 meters), the highest point of the Manaslu Circuit.
Initially, we pass through moraines and small lakes that remain frozen. Then we’ll have rugged, sloppy trains and a path covered with snow to reach Larkya La.
From Larkya La, you’ll have the panoramic views of Mt. Manaslu, Annapurna, Himlung, Kang Guru, Annapurna II, Gyaji Kung and Cheo Himal.
After reaching the pass, we’ll trek down to Bhimtang, which takes around 4-5 hrs. Overnight and a delicious dinner at the tea house.

I hope you all are enjoying the trek. Today is the last day of our legs. We’ll have 7-8 hours of downhill walking passing through the admirable pine and rhododendron forests. Further, the trail also takes us through several elegant villages – Karche, Gho and Tilije before reaching Dharapani.
During the journey, you’ll get the adorable views of Mt. Manaslu, Himlung and Phungi Himal. Dharapani marks the beginning of the Annapurna Circuit and the end of the Manaslu region.

After having a morning meal, we’ll leave Dharapani in a private vehicle. You will enjoy a scenic atmosphere by admiring the outstanding views. But be prepared for bumpy roads while travelling to Besisahar.
Thereafter, we’ll have lunch and take a jeep to reach Kathmandu. After reaching here, you may enjoy the luxury of fine dining, spas, hot bath, favourite drink and food at a 3-star hotel.

The Manaslu Circuit with Tsum Valley is a truly unique adventure that offers spectacular scenery, cultural immersion, a sacred journey, and mental resilience.
The Manaslu with TSUM valley trek opened for the trekkers in 2008. In a short period, it gains a huge number of visitors. The 21-day offer magical views of mountains that include Ganesh, Siringi, Bouddha Himal and Mount Manaslu Itself.
It is an unspoiled and challenging trek with limited facilities compared to the EBC and Annapurna treks. Its sections are narrow, rocky, and steep as it approaches the Larkya La Pass.
You’ll also have a chance to learn about the lifestyle, cultures and traditions of the locals. Furthermore, exploring monasteries, gompas, and chortens is rewarding.
You may also encounter blue sheep, Himalayan tahr, musk deer and white leopards. Additionally, the vibrant rhododendron forest, a diverse range of flora &fauna, makes your journey more magical.
The MANASLU circuit with TSUM Valley is a strenuous to moderate trek. It is not achievable for beginners without the right preparation. However, it requires a high level of fitness to conclude 3 weeks long journey.
The highest point of the trek is Larkya La Pass (5,100 m). The TSUM Valley itself has reached above 3,700 meters. Furthermore, there is a high chance of altitude sickness for the trekkers.
You have to walk around 6-7 hours daily, which may be tiresome for the trekkers. The trails are not properly manageable. It includes rugged terrains, rocky paths, steep ascents and descents. The weather is unpredictable and unstable even at the lower altitudes. The temperature ranges from -10 to -15 degrees at higher altitudes. Further, sudden storms may also affect our walking trails.
Compared to the EBC & Annapurna trek, the tea house provides you with minimal facilities. Further, there are limited choices of food. Additionally, there is limited electricity and internet.
Despite these obstacles, it is one of the remarkable and adventurous journeys. Remember, the trekker requires excellent physical fitness and mental toughness to accomplish the journey.
The 21-day Manaslu Circuit with the TSUM Valley trek is a challenging but amazingly rewarding adventure. It requires proper planning & preparation. The planning includes: physically, mentally and logistically.
To make your journey achievable, one should start fitness training at least 9-10 weeks before the journey. You’d better get involved in the cardiovascular training – cycling, swimming & jogging – at least 4/5 times a week.
The strength training – squats, lunges and planks is equally significant. You may also take part in hiking training. It would be helpful during the journey.
You may also practice Yoga and meditation to improve focus, which leads you to a pleasant and peaceful hike. Further, these activities also strengthen your mind and offer a wide range of mental, physical, emotional, and social benefits.
Make sure to prepare all trekking gear and equipment before the commencement of the journey. Ensure your travel insurance allows you to travel freely with a peaceful and pleasant mind.
It is very common to face altitude sickness, when you hike above 2000-2500 meters. It is a condition when your body doesn’t properly adapt the oxygen at the higher elevations.
Headache, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, trouble sleeping are the common symptoms that trekker’s have to face during high-altitude treks. If not properly it led to High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) and High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE).
To minimize the risk of altitude sickness, we have 3 day acclimatization in the entire 21 days. It is necessary to adapt and adjust with the high altitude and changing environments.
Here are some preventive measures of altitude sickness.
Gradual ascents: During the trek, we’ll give priority to the gradual ascents.
Stay Hydrated: Stay hydrated and drink at least 4-5 liters of water every day.
Medication –Consume the Diamox aka Acetazolamide 1-2 day prior the trek.
Alcohol & Tobacco – Avoid consuming alcohol & tobacco after the trip begins.
Last but not least, always listen to yourself, and never push yourself higher if your body not allowing.
The first question might have in your mind whether the beginners can do the Manaslu Circuit with the TSUM valley Trek. Of course, you can.
It is not like walking in the garden. It is possible. However, you need proper preparations. The trek crosses above 5,100 meters, which can be challenging for the trekkers. The trek runs for 21 days, which can be physically and mentally demanding. It is more isolated compared to other treks. Further, the route has limited health facilities.
Though it is not a technical climbing skill. You’d better be involved in sports activities and some other fitness training, at least 9-10 hours before the trip. You may also walk with a 6-7 kilogram backpack. Hiring an experienced guide is very important for your comfort and safety.
If you are a motivated beginner with normal fitness, the Manaslu circuit with the TSUM valley is doable. It is a scenic adventure, less crowded in a peaceful and serene environment.
There are four seasons in Nepal – Spring, Autumn, Monsoon and Winter.
Spring (March-May) – The spring is one of the promising seasons for the Manaslu Circuit with the TSUM valley trek. During this time, the weather is clear and stable. You will be glad to see the rhododendrons and lush greenery in the lower altitudes. It is also a promising time for bird watching and enjoying the local festivals.
Autumn (Sep-Nov ) – You’ll get the best experience while trekking in the autumn. All through the season, the skies are clear, dry trails and clear crystal views of Manaslu, Ganesh, Bouddha and other surrounding peaks.
You’ll find moderate weather during the day. There is no chance of landslides from October. The majority of trekkers choose autumn, but still peaceful than the Annapurna and Everest regions.
Winter (Dec-Feb) – Winter is not particularly worthwhile for the Manaslu Circuit with the Tsum Valley trek. Throughout this time, there has been heavy cold everywhere. The high passes are blocked by the heavy snowfall.
This season is rewarding for the highly experienced trekkers. The snow-covered mountains and clear skies offer magnificent views.
Monsoon ( June to August) – Trekking in Manaslu and TSUM valley is generally not recommended in the monsoon season. During this time, there is heavy rainfall, cloud cover, and poor visibility.
There are high chances of landslides, floods and mudflows from the upper valley. Further, the levels of the river increase and become impassable. This season is unsafe and sore trekking conditions. During this time, there are less crowded compared to other seasons.
When you are in Kathmandu, you’ll have delightful and delicious cuisine while staying in a 3-star hotel. During the trek, we’ll provide you with 3 courses of meals a day – breakfast, lunch and dinner – along with hot beverages.
While options are limited compared to the luxurious trek – Annapurna and Everest, you can still have fresh, prepared meals from us.
While having breakfast, you may have several options. It includes: Tibetan Bread, Chapatti, Omelettes, Boiled Eggs, Porridge, cornflakes, and Muesli.
We’ll provide you with high-nutrient and protein-rich food – Dal, Bhat, Tarkari aka Rice, Lentils & Vegetables for dinner. Along with you may enjoy fried rice, Mo: Mo, Spaghetti, Pasta, and Thupka.
There are several options to offer in drinks: tea (milk, black, lemon), fruit juice, coffee, and local chang (millet beer).
While staying in Kathmandu, you’ll stay in a 3-star hotel with a bunch of facilities. After starting the trek, we will mostly stay in a tea house, local lodges and homestays. It is not as modest as the Annapurna and Everest regions
We’ll have twin sharing rooms along with wooden beds, a mattress, a pillow and blankets. There are no attached bathrooms even in the lower regions. There are communal dining areas and no room services. It is quite cheap. The price ranges from 5 to 15 USD per night.
When you are in remote regions, especially in the TSUM valley, you have to stay with the local families. You’ll have a common room to sleep with a mattress and thick blankets.
You’ll get an authentic cultural experience while staying with the local family.
Travel Insurance is not an option; it is essential when you are hiking above 5,000 meters or going on a long day’s journey.
The Manaslu Circuit with the TSUM valley trek reaches above 5100 meters with less medical facilities. If you suffer from altitude sickness, injury or any kind of accident, it will cover all your medical expenses.
The Nepalese government and trekking agencies also demand travel insurance with trekkers when you are hiking above 3,500 meters. Further, the prohibited area of Manaslu and TSUM is more complicated than other trekking regions.
It is also helpful if your trip is cancelled due to bad weather, political unrest or any other unforeseen circumstances. Furthermore, it also protects your personal belongings and manages other necessary stuff.
You need a few permits for the Manaslu Circuit with the TSUM valley trek. It includes Manaslu Restricted Area Permit, TSUM Valley Permit, Manaslu Conservation Area Permit and Annapurna Conservation Area Permit.
Special Restricted Area Permit (RAP) – Manaslu – This permit is necessary from Jagat to Samagonn. It costs around $100 per person for first 7 days (Sept-Nov), and $ 75 (Dec-Aug). After the first seven days, you have to pay 15 USD per day.
Special Restricted Area Permit (RAP) – TSUM valley – This permit is necessary to enter in the TSUM valley. It costs around 40 per person for a week (Sept-Nov) and 30 per person/week (Dec–Aug). The extension charge is $7 per day after a week.
Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP) – This permit is mandatory to enter in the Manaslu Circuit trek route. It costs $30 per head.
Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) –This permit is necessary from Dharapani till you exit ACAP in Besisahar. It also costs USD 30 per person.
You can easily obtain these permits from Nepal Tourism Board, Kathmandu. Remember, TIMS card is essential but not mandatory.
After purchasing the tour package from Morning Star Treks it includes almost everything that you need during the journey. We are a fully supported trek package. There are a few expenses that trekkers will cover their own.
During the Manaslu Circuit with the TSUM Valley trek, you should prepare to pay for the hot shower, gadget charging and WI-FI. In the lower valley, it may be free. However, in the remote and Upper valley, you are liable to pay.
We will not cover any extra expenses for drinks or any food items not listed in the itinerary.
We Morning Star Treks always fulfill the needs and demand of our valuable clients. During the Manaslu and TSUM valley journey, all road transportation will take care by our company. After arriving in Kathmandu, our company employee will receive you at the exit gate. He will take you to the reserved 3-4 star hotel in a private vehicle (car, jeep or van).
For the journey from Kathmandu to Soti Khola and back from Dharapani to Kathmandu, we will share a bus or jeep depends on the size of our trek members.
We’ll provide you free SIM card (NTC/NCELL) for using data while you trek. However, you need to return after the journey is over.
Selecting between Private vs. Group trek depends on your choice, preferences and priorities.
The Private treks are more customized and offer flexibility in terms of itinerary, dates and pace. It is a bit expensive, but you have your personal guide and porters. It is generally costlier compared to a group trek. It is also ideal for the couple, family and friends.
Similarly, Group Trek is less costly and affordable than a private tour. The itinerary will be fixed. Usually, you have 15-16 members in a single group. It has limited customisation and flexibility.
During the trek, you may also share your experiences with the fellow trekkers. The guides or the team leader is the decision maker in the group trek.

The challenges are High altitude passes, long duration treks (21 days), remote terrain and daily walks of 6-7 hrs.
The highest elevation of the Manaslu TSUM valley trek is 5,106 meters.
Sorry, Solo trekking is prohibited in the Manaslu and TSUM valley region.
No it is a remote and less visited compared to other treks. It offers a peaceful, sacred and pleasant trek.

Guides & Support Staff
Yes you need a porter and guide. A porter can carry 20-25 kg of bags. Furthermore, guides navigate you through the trek. They also have the depth knowledge of the destinations.
Accommodation and Facilities
As we know, it is a remote trek. There is no any ATM centres or money exchange counters. However, it is easily available in the Kathmandu.
Compared to modern treks, EBC & Annapurna, you will have the limited facilities. Some tea house may offer you a Wi-Fi and gadgets charging. However, you have to pay certain amount of fee to them.
Weather & Seasons
The promising time are Spring (March to May), and Autumn (Sep-Nov). During these months, the weather is stables, safe trails and clear crystal views.
