Trip Information of Everest Base Camp Trek 14 days

Best season and weather

Primarily, the 14-day Everest base camp Trek is ideally a journey that is meant to be done in the Spring and Autumn seasons. The temperature in spring varies from 20 to 25°C, which is quite acceptable for trekking. The landscapes will be painted with the colorful rhododendrons and wildflowers in low altitudes, adding more beauty to the natural environment of the Khumbu region.

Likewise, in the autumn, or fall, the temperature can typically fall around 17 to 20°C, which offers stable weather for walking and enjoying the natural scenery. The best point of traveling this season is that it coincides with festivals like Dashain and Tihar, offering trekkers an additional glimpse of Nepal’s rich culture apart from Sherpa culture and hospitality.

Difficulty

The difficulty level of this trek to EBC is considered moderately demanding. During trekking, trekkers encounter several main difficulties, including high altitude, long walking durations, unpredictable weather, and limited facilities in teahouses or lodges. Without good fitness and positive mental thinking, you will not be able to continue your trek for 14 days, walking 5 to 6 hours on average.

If you are accustomed to staying in comfortable places with all the facilities you require, you may find it challenging to adjust to the basic and simple teahouses, especially at high altitudes. Moreover, due to the remote location, there are very few health posts that offer basic medical facilities, so in any severe case, helicopter evacuation is needed.

Altitude Sickness

One of the biggest challenges for this 14-day Everest Base Camp Trek itinerary is the risk of altitude sickness. Once you ascend above 3000 meters, the risk of developing acute mountain sickness (AMS) increases. After reaching Namche Bazaar, the risk rises, so we have included an acclimatization day in this town.

The highest location you will reach is Kala Patthar at 5545 meters, so it is vital that your body adjusts naturally and that you are aware of symptoms like headache, nausea, vomiting, trouble breathing, and so on to take necessary steps for prevention for the safe alpine journey in the Everest region.

Preparation and Fitness

If you want to embark on any trek in the mountains of Nepal, the most critical part of being ready for the trek is preparation and fitness. As this is a moderate hiking excursion, you will need to have solid fitness to complete this trek at ease. To build solid fitness, consider exercises like strength training with weight lifting, squats, and lunges, which are ideal for steep ascents and rugged terrain.

Additionally, since gyms usually offer the equipment required for hiking, you might join one to engage in exercises like cycling, stair climbing, and others.  Finally, when trekking in the heart of the Himalayas, you need to wear appropriate clothes, get enough sleep, keep hydrated, and eat a balanced diet to boost your immunity to cold temperatures.

Food and Accommodation

The accommodation provided at the Everest Base Camp Trek for 14 days will be in local, cozy teahouses and mountain lodges. Mostly, the rooms are twin/shared, and they provide quite simple bedding and shared bathrooms. The standard is basic but still nice enough for the trail.

In the villages at lower altitudes, for example, Phakding, Namche Bazaar, and Tengboche, there will be more facilities such as hot showers, internet, and charging stations. As you ascend to higher elevations, such as Lobuche and Gorakshep, the facilities become more minimal. This is why a warm sleeping bag is highly recommended for a good night’s sleep.

The food is freshly cooked and ranges from traditional dal bhat to simple favorites like noodles, fried rice, pasta, soups, pancakes, and eggs. Breakfast is generally accompanied by tea or coffee, while lunch and dinner comprise a variety of Nepali and international dishes. Note that hot water, bottled drinks, coffee, and juices are not included in the package. For your health, we recommend that you drink boiled or purified water when trekking in the area.

Transportation

Morning Star Trek provides airport transfers to and from the hotel for your convenience during the 14-day EBC Trek package. You will also be provided with the airport flight to Lukla, either from Ramechhap or Kathmandu, and vice versa. However, the international flight ticket fee doesn’t fall under the package.

You can also upgrade your flight to a helicopter ride for an additional fee. To arrange this, please notify us before the start of the trek. Since most travel is by foot, you only need transportation for airport transfers and flights to and from Lukla.

Communication

As you will find internet access in most of the teahouses while trekking along the route of the Everest region, the connectivity might not be as good as you are used to. A local SIM card from either NCELL or NTC is your best bet if you plan to visit the mountains and want uninterrupted calls. Both of these companies are easily reachable either at the airport or at downtown Kathmandu.

Once you have a SIM card, you have to decide how much data you want and then buy it. In other words, if you plan to be on the trail for 14 days, you can purchase data that will last that long. In this way, you can access the data free of charge and contact your friends and family while you are on the trail. Your communication will be easier throughout your trip in the Solu Khumbu area.

Permit

The trek to EBC adventure requires you to have special permits to protect the Khumbu region’s natural and cultural heritage. The permit fees are already covered by Morning Star Trek’s offered trek package. Below are the main permits that you will be getting:

Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit: It costs around NPR 3,000 per person, which can be obtained either in Kathmandu City or at the entrance gate of the park in Monjo village, which lies on the classic route of the Khumbu region.

Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit: It also costs around NPR 3,000 per person, which is issued only in Lukla town of the Everest region.

Visa

Getting a tourist visa in Nepal is very easy after arriving at Tribhuvan Airstrip. Once you land and finish the airport check-in procedures, you can fill out the arrival card form and complete the tourist visa to get the visa for your stay in Nepal. The visa will cost 30 $ per person for 15 days, 50 $ per person for 30 days, and 125 $ per person for 90 days.

After the approval of your visa in Nepal, your visa will get stamped for authorization, and you can travel to your desired places. Make sure you provide the required documents when filling out the form.

Travel Insurance

The traveler must take insurance when going to a very high place, such as the Everest Base Camp Trek. The insurance must be able to cover not only the regular medical emergencies but also altitude sickness, evacuation by helicopter, cancellation of the trip, and loss or theft of the insured’s belongings.

The insurance must be included in the trekking and extreme adventure and must offer 24/7 emergency assistance. Reading the details of the cover is essential to ensure coverage at altitudes of more than 5,000 meters and to confirm that activities during the trek are also covered. It is also a great way to stay secure while enjoying a nice walk in the mountains.

Extra Expenses

There are a few items not contained in the Everest Base Camp Trek package, such as food in Kathmandu, personal travel expenditures and medical insurance, international flights, and consumables during the trek (drinks, snacks, desserts, and hot showers in tea houses).

The gratuity you give to guides, porters, and drivers, as well as any additional costs for excess baggage due to heavy luggage on the Lukla plane, is also not included in the package. In the event of termination of the trek due to sickness or any other issue, then the trekker is responsible for the cost of related hotels, food, and flights.

Private vs. group trek

Private and group treks are designed to cater to the personal interests of the trekkers. In case you opt for a private tour, not only will you be able to choose your date, but you will also be able to adjust the itinerary according to your needs, which will guarantee a trip with the full attention of a nice and pleasant stay.

Group treks, conversely, are perfect for thrifty trekkers who are keen on making new contacts, having a nice time, and exploring the mountains. Also, group trips provide extra safety and support in case of an emergency.
