Overview of Pokhara City and Lakeside Tour

The Pokhara City and Lakeside Tour is a pleasant and easy day visit that will introduce you to the best of the natural beauty and culture of Pokhara. The trip starts with a peaceful boat ride through Phewa Lake which is the second largest lake in Nepal. The snow-capped Annapurna mountains appear as the mirror image of the lake, as you sail along its serene water. It is a lovely and calm beginning of the day.

The tour then proceeds to visit temples, caves, waterfalls, and viewpoints, which will provide you with an overload of the beauty of Pokhara, hospitable locals and breath taking views. Morning Star Treks organizes this amazing sightseeing adventure, making your day in the heart of Pokhara comfortable, thoughtful, and truly memorable.

Visit Tal Barahi Temple, one of Nepal’s few island temples and a popular attraction in Pokhara and is devoted to the goddess Barahi (a form of Durga). This is the only island shrine that can be visited by boat and provides a panoramic view of the Phewa Lake and the mountains around it. As you get closer to the temple, the guide tells the history and the local myths of the temple. We visit the Lakeside, have a peaceful visit, and take photos by boat.

The next part of the tour is the exploration of waterfalls and caves of Pokhara. The tour explores Pokhara’s famous waterfalls and caves. We drive about 10 minutes to Devi’s Fall (Patale Chhango), where the Pardi Khola (the outlet of Phewa Lake) plunges dramatically into a narrow sinkhole and disappears underground. You will stand on a viewing platform above the fall and feel the mist on your face as the river roars below. The guide tells you how the water vanishes into the earth, hence the name “Underworld Waterfall.”

Across the road, descend into Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave to see a Shiva lingam shrine and the underground waterfall (steps can be wet; use the handrails). A beautiful staircase leads deep underground to an interior chamber where an underground stream reappears as a waterfall beneath a towering stalactite ceiling. Inside is a Shiva lingam shrine; your guide shares its spiritual significance.

In the late morning, the tour moves on to see the Seti River Gorge from a lookout. View the milky white Seti River carving a narrow gorge beneath the city. The contrast of the rushing glacial water and steep cliffs is impressive.

The guide describes the way in which this gorge has been formed due to rain and snowmelt. At the end we pay a visit to the International Mountain Museum outside town. This museum presents the Nepalese heritage about mountains featuring displays about Everest and Annapurna climbing expeditions, climbing gear, and Nepali peoples. You will also have time to read scale models of the peaks, historical photos, and artifacts of well-known climbs.

The Morning Star Treks guide will offer an insight into local culture, geography, and mountain lore throughout the day, so that you never miss out on the Pokhara sightseeing. A Nepali-style lunch is served at a Lakeside restaurant around midday. The tour includes comfortable hotel (or airport) pickup and drop-off, all transportation by private vehicle, and entry fees.

By early afternoon, you return from a memorable introduction to Pokhara’s lakeside beauty and cultural sights. This comprehensive Pokhara city and lakeside tour blends natural beauty, cultural landmarks, and easy activities for a memorable introduction to Pokhara.

Pokhara City and Lakeside Tour Detail Itinerary

itinerary-icon

Our day starts early with hotel pickup. By 8:00 AM we arrive at the shores of Phewa Lake. A wooden boat takes the group across the calm lake in the morning light. The Annapurna range reflects on the water as you row toward the island temple. When the boat nears land, the Barahi Temple’s red-gold pagoda roof appears above the trees.

This two-story pagoda temple is one of Nepal’s few island shrines. Your guide explains that it is dedicated to the goddess Barahi (a form of Durga). You have time to climb the steps, offer a prayer or take photos, then return by boat to the Lakeside. At about 9:30 AM we depart by car for Devi’s Fall (Patale Chhango). A short walk leads to a viewing platform above the falls. Here the Pardi Khola (the outlet of Phewa Lake) crashes powerfully into a deep underground cavern.

You will feel the spray as the river roars below. The guide points out how the water instantly disappears underfoot – a dramatic effect of the gorge. After enjoying the view, We walk across the road to Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave. Inside, concrete stairways lead down to the cavern floor. You see a Shiva lingam shrine and an underground waterfall where the river resurfaces. The guide shares the local legend about the falls and cave. This visit takes about 15–20 minutes.

Around 10:30 AM we drive a short distance to a vantage point over the Seti River Gorge. From above, you can observe the milky-white Seti River carving a narrow marble canyon through Pokhara. The guide explains the river’s role in shaping the valley. Then at 11:00 AM we head to the International Mountain Museum. You have about one hour to explore its exhibits, which illustrate Himalayan history, famous peak climbs, and mountain culture.

The museum has scale models of the Himalayas and exhibits of local ethnic groups. We end the tour in the early afternoon, around 1:00–2:00 PM, after enjoying lunch at a lakeside restaurant, and then return to your hotel or Pokhara airport by car. The guide and driver of the Morning Star Treks make the Pokhara sightseeing comforting and enjoyable throughout the tour.

Trip Information of Pokhara City and Lakeside Tour

Permit & Cost

No special permits are needed for this Pokhara City and Lakeside Tour. All the attractions we visit (Phewa Lake, Tal Barahi Temple, Davi’s Fall (Patale Chhango), Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave, International Mountain Museum) are open to the public. The tour price includes the boat ride and entry fees, so there are no hidden permit charges during the day.

You should plan only for personal expenses such as tips, snacks, or souvenirs. The package also includes a Lakeside lunch. Morning Star Treks handles all transportation and site tickets in the package cost. In summary, you pay one price for the tour and won’t need additional permits or fees on tour day.

Best Time to Do This Tour

The Pokhara city and lakeside tour is best enjoyed in clear weather. Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) are the most popular seasons. Skies are clear during these months and the mountain views most spectacular. The climate is pleasent and ideal in sightseeing. On the contrary, the monsoon (June–August) brings heavy rain, which may interfere with outdoor activities and clouds mountain views.

It is colder in winter (December–February), however, the days are usually bright and sunny. When you come in winter, you should wear layers because it is colder in the morning. The morning light at the lake is beautiful at any time of the year, and we plan to start the tour at sunrise to experience the best.

Fitness and Preparation

This is a tour that requires minimal physical activity. Travelers require a minimum fitness to walk moderate distances and a few steps up. The itinerary involves taking a boat, hiking up the temple stairs and into the cave (approximately 100 steps), so the ability to walk and stand comfortably is adequate. There is no necessity to acclimatize to high altitude because Pokhara is approximately 800-900 meters in altitude.

In preparation, wear comfortable walking shoes and breathable layers. Bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to protect against sun exposure on the lake and open sites. We recommend carrying a small water bottle, as you may get thirsty while walking between attractions. Since this is a one-day trip, no special training is required; just normal good health. On tour day, rest well the night before to enjoy the full morning of Pokhara sightseeing.

Guide and Staff

Your Pokhara city and lakeside tour will be led by an experienced local guide provided by Morning Star Treks. The guide speaks fluent English and is trained to provide information about the history and culture of Pokhara. The guide will deal with the itinerary, provide narration at all the sites and make sure the tour is smooth running.

All road transfers are done by providing a comfortable vehicle with a separate driver. The guide and driver are both professional and friendly and are prepared to help with any requirement. The guide is able to respond to the questions, propose the locations to take photographs, and adjust the speed of the group.

We also have staff members trained in emergency and first aid in the event of any medical or logistical problem. Group sizes are kept modest (typically 10–15 guests) so the guide can give personal attention. Overall, the Morning Star Treks team ensures you have a safe, informative, and enjoyable Pokhara sightseeing experience.

Visa and Permit

Every foreigner who visits Nepal is required to have a tourist visa. The visas may either be acquired at the Tribhuvan International Airport (Kathmandu) upon arrival, or upon crossing the land borders, or one can apply to acquire e-Visa prior to traveling. The current visa prices are approximately 30 USD per 15 days, 50 USD per 30 days and 125 USD per 90 days (Multientry).

These fees are paid in US dollars or Nepalese rupees. Visa fees are typically paid in cash (USD preferred; NPR accepted). Card facilities may not always be available. It is best to have some cash on hand to pay the fee. Citizens of India and some SAARC countries have special entry arrangements (often free or lower-cost visa), so check the latest rules for your nationality. Besides the visa, no additional permit is needed specifically for this day tour.

Davi’s Fall and Barahi Temple do not require special permits. Morning Star Treks can advise you on the visa application process if needed. Be sure to carry your passport and visa documents when visiting Pokhara.
