The Rolwaling Valley trek is a spectacular journey that offers a diverse range of scenery and cultural experiences. It is a remote and impressive trek located in the eastern-central region of Nepal. It is often referred to as a “hidden gem”; Rolwaling is a less-touched route in Nepal.

The captivating journey takes their trekkers to the high mountain passes, Tashi Lapcha La (5,755 m). The name Rolwaling denotes “valley carved by a plough”. The trip is delightful for its remote wilderness, cultural insights, and challenging terrains.
Through the journey, you’ll explore a promising lake named Tsho Rolpa, Omi TSO, and the lake of the milk, also called Dudh Kanda, followed by both Hindus and Buddhists.
The major highlight of the trek is Na Gaon – an ancient monastery. There is a belief that Buddhist Spiritual devotee Padma Sambhava meditated for several years at this place.

Your adventure begins upon arriving in Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal. Our company representative will pick you up at the Tribhuvan International Airport. We’ll then transfer to the reserved 3-4 star hotel. After taking a rest, you can explore the vibrant market of Thamel. Meanwhile, in the evening, we’ll have a short meet-up about our trip at the conference room of the hotel.

After taking an early morning breakfast, we’ll have a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Charikot. It has the distance of 125-130 kilometers, which will be covered in 7-8 hrs.

The Day four is an important portion of the Rolwaling Valley Trek. Today, we’ll enter the Gauri Shankar Conservation area. It also connects to the Everest region.
Upon having breakfast, our trek continues; we will pass through the rhododendron forests before reaching Singati Bazar. From here, we’ll cross the Tamakoshi River via a suspension bridge.
After 5-6 hours of the journey, we’ll reach Suri Dobhan. From this place, we’ll have spectacular views of Gauri Shankar Himal (7,134 m).

Today, we’ll gain the 420 meters of elevation within 5-6 hrs. After leaving Suri Dobhan, we’ll ascend upwards and get the breathtaking views of diverse landscapes and surrounding hills. Then, we will proceed to get the scenic views of the Tamakoshi River.
On the 5th day of the journey, we will pass through terraced farmlands, forested paths, rural areas, charming villages of Sherpa and Tamang, before reaching Jagat.

Day 6 is the challenging section for the trekkers. Today, we’ll gain an altitude of 550 meters, which takes 6-7 hours to complete.
After having an early morning breakfast, our trek begins. We’ll pass through the dense forests, admiring terraced fields and waterfalls via a suspension bridge.
Crossing through the several settlements, including Chetchet, we’ll observe the daily lifestyle of local people. As you ascend ahead, we’ll be rewarded with the impeccable views of Gauri Shankar Himal and other surrounding mountains.

The journey from Simigaun to Kyalche is a challenging but rewarding segment of the Rolwaling Valley trek. The trek is moderately strenuous, with steep ascents and descents and rocky paths.
After having a morning breakfast, we will leave Simigaun and take our steps to the next destination. During the journey, we’ll have a backdrop of the Gauri Shankar Himalaya. Further, our path leads us to enchanting rhododendron forests. It is also possible to encounter monkeys, gorillas and Himalayan goats.
After 6-7 hrs of the walk, we’ll reach Kyalche and reside at the tea house.

Day by day, our journey is turning challenging but equally rewarding. Today, we will gain the elevation of 700 meters within 7-8 hrs.
As we proceed, we cross a rugged path that runs alongside the picturesque Rolwaling River. As we continue, we get the breathtaking view of the Gaurishankar Himal (7134m) dominating the far horizon, which enthrals us. We ultimately reach the Sherpa settlement of Beding after continuing our journey over a comparatively level path.
Situated by the side of the river, Beding is the largest and most beautiful village of the entire Rolwaling Valley. This place foretells about the life and culture of the Sherpas. Here we’ll get comfortable accommodation and meals at the hotel.

After having a peaceful night and a delicious meal, we continue our journey on the 9th day of the Rolwaling Valley journey. Today, we’ll have short and easy trails.
As we proceed to high altitude, we will be glad to see the mesmerising views of mountains, waterfalls, icefalls, surrounding landscapes and valleys.
Your trail takes you through Mani stones, prayer flags, yak pastures and chortens before reaching Na Gaun – a beautiful village nestled in the heart of the Himalayas. We have a night stay at a tea house or a hotel.

Today we’ll take a rest. Acclimatisation is extremely important before taking your steps to a higher altitude. It also allows our body to adjust to lower oxygen levels.
We also have numerous activity options. After taking breakfast, we’ll visit the village and witness the lifestyle of local people. Upon that, we’ll explore Nagau Gompa –one of the oldest Tibetan monasteries.
The monastery is beautifully carved with wood and stone. If you visit in May, you may also see the Buddha Purnima festival.
If you are adventurous, you may embark on your steps for the Yalung Pass. It gives you flawless views of the Gauri Shankar and other mountains.

We will continue our journey on the 11th day. After having breakfast, we will walk through the rocky terrains and glacial moraines. As you reach the lake, you’ll be overwhelmed by its beauty and elegance.
The icy turquoise water, icy moraine, screed slopes, ice walls and towering peaks in the surrounding leave you in awe.
There are no tea houses in this area. We will stay in the tented camps.

We got up early and began trekking in the direction of Tolumbhu Buka. As we journey to the ultimate end of the fascinating Tsho Rolpa, our route takes us along it. We follow the Trakding Glacier’s lateral moraines along the route, giving us spectacular views of the snow-capped peaks that embellish the surrounding terrain.
We finally reach Tolumbhu Buka after continuing on this frozen and occasionally slippery path. Here, we may relax our tired bodies and get ready for the adventures that lie ahead while finding peace and calm for the night.

This is the most challenging and technical day of the entire Rolwaling Valley trek. Today, we will set foot on the Tashi Lapcha La, which has an altitude of 5,755 meters.
The trek will be strenuous, so we’ll start early in the morning. After ascending upwards for a few hours, we will reach Tashi Lapcha La Pass. From here, we can witness the spectacular views of Mt. Everest, Mt. Melengtse, Parchamo Peak, Ramdung Go, and the Gauri Shankar ranges.
After spending some quality time, we descend to Thyangbo. The walking may be strenuous and unpredictable due to the weather conditions.

Following a delicious breakfast, we descend towards the elegant village of Khumjung. Our trails gradually follow the meadows and rugged paths. We’ll pass Thame monastery and reach Thame – one of the elegant villages of the Sherpa.
Thereafter, we will follow the Khumbu trails and enjoy the beautiful views of Ama Dablam and Thamserku. Then we cross the suspension bridge over the Bhote Koshi River before reaching Khumjung. We have a delightful dinner here.

The trek from Khumjung to Namche Bazar is a relatively short and easy trek. It takes around 3-4 hours to complete the journey.
After having breakfast, our trail descends through the beautiful scenery, following the rhododendron and pine forests, admiring the amazing views of Ama Dablam, Lhotse and other surrounding peaks.
Crossing the suspension bridge, following the trails of the gorges of Dudhkoshi, we will reach Namche Bazar.
After taking some rest, you can explore the vibrant streets of Namche. You may give gifts and souvenirs to the family.
This place is adorable for a variety of cafés and restaurants. You may enjoy your best meal in the evening.

This is the final leg of our Rolwaling Valley trek. It is a downhill walk with certain elevation drops, so it is regarded as easier than an ascent.
After taking a healthy breakfast at Namche, we’ll descend through dense forest and Sherpa villages. We’ll cross several suspension bridges, including the Hillary Suspension.
All through the journey, we’ll pass several settlements – Phakding, Monjo, Benkar, TokTok, and Cheeplung before reaching Lukla.
As you reach Lukla, we will celebrate the completion of our trek. You may enjoy your favourite meals, sharing your journey experiences with fellow trekkers.

We have a scenic flight from Lukla to Kathmandu. It takes around 30-35 minutes to reach the capital city of Nepal.
After reaching the hotel, we take our lunch. We have all day to explore Kathmandu city. You may visit some UNESCO and historical sites that include: Lord Shiva Temple (Pashupati Nath), the Monkey God Temple (Swoyambhu), Kathmandu Durbar Square and Bouddhanath Stupa.
Meanwhile, in the evening, there will be a farewell dinner for the trekkers. You will enjoy the savory Nepali dish that includes: Rice, Lentils, Seasonal Vegetables, Chicken/Mutton/Fish curry, Curd, Spinach, Pickle and soft drinks.

You need to prepare for three sections: physical, mental and logistics.
To make your journey accomplishable, one should start fitness and endurance training at least 2 months before the journey. You’d better get involved in the cardiovascular training – cycling, swimming & jogging at least 3-4 times a week.
The strength training that includes – squats, lunges and planks are equally noteworthy. You may also take part in hiking training for some weeks. I

Since the Rolwaling Valley trek reaches above 5,500 meters, there is a higher chance of altitude sickness. AMS or Acute Mountain Sickness is a condition when your body doesn’t properly adapt to the lower oxygen at higher altitudes. Its major symptoms are nausea, vomiting, headache, and shortness of breath.
To minimise the risk of altitude sickness, we also have an acclimatisation day during the 18-day strenuous journey.

Ascend gradually – All through the trek give priority to the gradual ascents. Be steady and don’t be in a hurry.
Stay Hydrated: Stay hydrated and drink at least 4-5 liters of water every day.
Alcohol & Tobacco – Avoid consuming alcohol and tobacco during the trek.
Medication –Consume the Diamox aka Acetazolamide 1-2 day prior the trek.
Listen to your body – Never ignore any health symptoms you feel during the journey.
The Rolwaling Valley trek is a moderate to strenuous trek; therefore, it is less recommended for beginners. The trek reaches above 5,700 meters, which can be challenging. Further, the trek continues for 18 days, along with long hours of walking that demand physical and mental resilience.
The Rolwaling Valley trek doesn’t demand technical climbing. However, it is also not like walking in the park. Therefore, a beginner needs excellent physical fitness. You should make a proper plan and be involved in cardiovascular training –swimming & running at least 3-4 months before the trip.
During the preparations, the fresher trekker may also walk with a 6-7 kilogram backpack at least twice a day. Hiring an experienced guide is very important for your comfort and safety throughout the journey.

The autumn and spring are the promising time for Rolwaling Valley Trek. Here are the details.
Autumn Season (Sep to Nov) – The monsoon has just ended. There are very few chances of rain. There will be clear crystal mountain views. All through the season, the skies are clear. You’ll get the panoramic views of mountains and valleys. Aside from this, you may also enjoy the vibrant festival, which falls in October and early November.
Spring (March to May) – The spring is also the best option for the Rolwaling Valley trek. The rhododendrons and other flowers are blooming everywhere. You will be amazed with the chirping of birds in the morning. It is also the perfect time to encounter the wildlife. Furthermore, you will get good trail conditions before the monsoon.
Winter (Dec to Jan) – The winter season is not particularly worthwhile compared to the autumn and spring. There are high chances of snowfall that lead to the blockages of the trails. In higher altitudes, the tea houses and lodges are also temporarily closed due to bad weather.
If you are a pro trekker; then winter will be the best option for you. This season is not recommended for the beginner’s.
Monsoon (June-August) – The Monsoon is the last best option among all four seasons. During this time, there is heavy rainfall, cloud cover, and poor visibility.
There are high chances of rain everywhere. There is landslides, mudflows and floods. The clouds cover and block the views. Due to the stingy weather, the air and road transports are cancelled or delayed.

During the trekking days, your facilities turned from elegant to basic. The Rolwaling valley area is a pristine and restricted region that is less connected with social life. Due to its remoteness, accommodation is simple with limited facilities.
In the lower altitudes, tea houses are readily available. You’ll get the twin sharing rooms, comfortable beds, a mattress, a pillow and blankets. There may be a communal dining area where trekkers interact with each other.
As you ascend to higher altitudes, the living facility is very rustic. The tea house will provide you with small bedrooms with minimum space and a common squat toilet. While crossing the Tashi Lapcha La Pass, you have to stay in the tented camps.
Food & Meals are available mainly through the tea houses and lodges during the Rolwaling Valley trek. In the lower altitudes like Charikot, Jagat, Simigaun, and Beding, you have lots of choices.
As you trek above Na and Tsho Rolpa, the meals become limited and repetitive. In these areas, you have to choose healthier foods over tastier ones, such as rice, boiled potatoes, soup, and porridge.
During the camping sections, the food & meals are prepared by the group trek members. At the same time, there is a limited variety. However, you have to be conscious of highly nutritious foods that help in high-altitude trekking.
When you are in Kathmandu, you can enjoy a wide variety of food, including Nepalese Cuisine, Indian Styles, Continental, Thai, Chinese, and many other dishes.
Throughout the journey, you may enjoy Nepalese staple foods – Dal, Bhat, Tarkari. Furthermore, you may also try other dishes like Tibetan Bread, Egg Dishes, Porridges, Chapatti, Thupka, Mo: Mo (Dumplings) and several others.
While in the higher altitudes, hot drinks will play a crucial role in helping you adapt to the environment.
When you are in Nepal for high-altitude treks, travel insurance is mandatory. The hiking above 3,000 meters leads you to several obstacles and hindrances. Further, the Rolwaling region is more challenging due to remote location, icy passes and technical sections.
The Rolwaling Valley Trek reaches above 5,700 meters with fewer medical services. The Nepalese government and trekking agencies also demand travel insurance with trekkers if they are hiking above 3,000 meters.

Rolwaling Valley is a restricted region located near the Tibetan border. For the trek in this area, you need three permits: Restricted Area Permit (RAP), Trekker’s Information Management System (TIMS), and Gauri Shankar Conservation Area Permit (GCAP)
Restricted Area Permit (RAP) – The Rolwaling valley is restricted area. It is mandatory for all foreign trekkers. It costs around $20 per week per person. Upon that, you have to pay 5 USD per day per person. However, the Nepalese nationals do not need to pay any amount.
Gauri Shankar Conservation Area Permit (GCAP) – This permit is required to enter the Gauri Shankar Conservation Area. It costs around 3000 NPR (one-time payment) for foreign nationals and 1000 for the SAARC nationals.
Trekker’s Information Management System (TIMS) – It is mandatory for all trekkers in Nepal, including the Rolwaling Valley trek. It costs around NPR 2000 per person.
